Description
In this follow-up to his debut in S.J. Parris's enormously popular Heresy, Giordano Bruno (renegade monk, philosopher, scientist, poet, and magician) returns to London in 1583, the year of the Great Conjunction—a worrisome, once-a-millennium alignment of Jupiter and Saturn said to herald the death of one age and the dawn of another. In this tense atmosphere, Bruno is immediately met by Elizabeth's spymaster Francis Walsingham, who recruits him to help her astrologer John Dee solve a bizarre murder: one of the queen's handmaids has been found with astrological symbols cut into her flesh, clutching a doll that depicts Elizabeth's death.

"Tudor England again proves to be fertile ground for an outstanding historical thriller, as shown by Parris's marvelous second novel featuring philosopher spy Giordano Bruno.... The suspenseful search for the murderer and the conspirators behind him makes the pages fly by. An admirable original sleuth and persuasive period detail bolster the taut plot."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Parris based both of her books on real-life historical figures, which include Bruno. She knows the period well, and her writing is reflective of that knowledge. Readers will hear the sounds of Elizabethan England, smell the Thames River, taste the food and feel the luxurious fabrics of the clothes worn by courtiers."—Kirkus Reviews
