Description
Through 59 works reproduced in color plates, this compact monograph introduces French postimpressionist Paul Gauguin (18481903), famous for his move to Tahiti and his beautiful paintings of island women but also significant for his use of symbolism, a vivid color palette, and indigenous art styles, all of which were highly influential to modern art. Here we see early works influenced by Pissarro and Degas (Interior of the Artist's Home), his emerging symbolist style (Vision After the Sermon of Jacob Wrestling with the Angel), and the mature explorations of his two stays in Tahiti, including the monumental masterwork Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?, finished in 1897.
