This archaeological survey of Alexandria, Virginia, describes and discusses the findings in a region that has been inhabited since 8,000 BC, when it was home to Native Americans who fished the Potomac River in dugout canoes. In the 17th century settlers arrived from England, and by the 18th century Alexandria had become a busy port city. Once an important center of the slave trade, the city was also home to a thriving free black community, even before the Civil War. Following preservation and reconstruction projects in the 1960s, Alexandria revealed a rich trove of artifacts, some of which are pictured in the 40 color and black and white photos here.
